Welcome

Welcome to Claremont, California. The fifth best city in the United States. At least that is what the paper says, what the record says. Hiden under in fine print it says the truth. Claremont is a crime infested town. It you crossed out the highschool, sure what was said would be the truth, their college, Pomona College keeps the rate lower, but the high school is infested with drug addicts, rapists, murderers, and suicidal teens. Will the truth be uncovered, or will it stay hidden forever?

His mother had opted to take the kids to their school today so that Benno could have all the time in the world before his big first day at Claremont High. His mother glorified this day, to Benno’s disgust. He would have gladly taken his siblings to school, if only to postpone his arrival at Claremont. But his mother was so excited about him going to school that he thought he’d spare her one day of his whining.

He got up pretty early and threw on a pair of basketball shorts and a white tank top. He had already packed his school and gym bag and they were waiting for him by his door. His stepdad was sipping coffee at the kitchen table when Benno came downstairs. He had a phone cradled to his ear but he managed to nod in the direction of the food that was prepared in the kitchen. Benno’s mother had made sausage and oven pancakes. Not too hungry, he grabbed a sausage, wrapped it in a pancake and headed out the door with a brief farewell to his stepdad.

When Benno arrived at school, he sat for a long time in his parked car staring at the building. His stomach did not feel happy and he wanted nothing more at that moment then to drive straight to the airport and catch the next flight back to Germany. He forced the rest of his breakfast down and the food settled his stomach a tad.

He entered the gym and found the office space where he expected the coaches to be. There was only one person that he could find, but it was the one he wanted. The soccer coach’s face exposed his sense of pleasant surprise when Benno asked where the weight room was. It was rare that he, the head of athletics at Claremont High, came face to face with a student here who was committed enough to their sport to work out independently. Sports weren’t such a big concern at Claremont.

“Wow,” the coach had said brazenly, examining Benno’s height and physique. Benno was used to this from coaches, who often judged new players on build alone. “I really look forward to having you on the team. We’re kind of in a rut, of sorts. There’s a lack of interest in the players I have and I’ve been struggling to get new guys in. But yeah, right back there is where it’s at. Be careful. Holler if you need anything.”

Benno gave his thanks and slouched off towards the weight room. There, he dropped his bag on the floor and sighed. Great, just great. He had dreaded that the soccer program would be laughable here, and by the lack of praises the coach had for the team, his fears had been proven true. He made his way to a leg press machine grumbling aloud about how he hated playing on a team with people who didn’t care. Throughout his workout the murmurings were relentless and increased in foolishness as time passed.

A bit over an hour later, he had showered and dressed in camouflage fatigues, a black shirt and white suspenders. With both of his bags over his shoulder, he headed back out to the parking lot by the gym to drop his gym bag in his car before classes.

It was just one of those days. Kim woke up early in the morning and she just simply couldn't get back to sleep. She looked over at her roommate who had dozed off a few hours after Kim had. Kim pondered on waking her up so she could have some company, but pushed the idea out of her head because she respected her and she didn't want her friend to be grouchy all morning.

She sighed as she walked into their bathroom to brush her teeth. Since she had nothing better to do, she filled the bath with a bit of water and washed her hair. She squeezed her bottle of shampoo, only to find that it was empty. She frowned but decided to borrow a bit of her roommate's shampoo. She'd buy more for her later on. She passed the shampoo through her long, silky hair, rinsed it and then quickly towel-dried it, as she really wasn't in the mood to blowdry it like she usually did. Plus, she liked her natural curls.

She walked back to the sleeping area and changed into a pair of denim shorts, her pink and black DC shoes and a white t-shirt with a random design in the corner. She wasn't in the mood to stay prettying herself up so she just ran a brush through her hair and put on a bit of eyeliner. Sure, she was still bored but at least this whole thing had passed the time.

She stole a glance at her watch and realised classes weren't for another hour or so. She walked over to her roommate and gently shook her.
"Hey, love, I'd start waking up if I were you," she said. "Classes in an hour...I'm just going to go for a walk ok?" Her roommate groaned. Kim shrugged and left the room. She intented to go to the gym to check about the next cheerleading practice, since they had a new captain who thought she owned the world...

It was a pretty morning, but then again...most mornings in California were. As well as most mornings in Australia...come to think of it, Kim wasn't really used to cold weather. Sure, it could get cold back home in Australia, but it was mostly hot and sunny there, hence why she and her brothers surfed a lot there. No one would be stupid enough to surf in the cold.

She hadn't expected to see anyone out in the parking lot yet. Students generally started gathering about 15 minutes before school started. The boy didn't look very familiar; and Kim knew most people at this school. Perhaps he was new...deciding to postpone her visit to check about practice, Kim decided to be the good kid and go talk to him...since she didn't really have anything better to do. She approached him, a wry smile on her face.
"Hey," she said. "I'm Kim. You new here?"

Crossing the parking lot, he tried to take in visually as much of the school grounds as he could. The campus seemed pretty large. He had such a hard time with directions and got lost constantly. He knew that he would be late to some of his classes at least for the first week, maybe for even a month he’d have trouble adjusting to the geography of the school.

He shrugged his gym bag off and let it drop onto the concrete when he reached his car. He reached in his pocket hoping to find his car keys. The sound of a voice broke the near silence that he had been used to most of the morning. With his hand still in his pocket, he turned his head in surprise to face the person addressing him. Upon seeing the stranger, his face instantly broke into a smile.

"Oh, very nice to meet you, Kim" he started to say. His hand came out of his pocket with a key ring in its grasp. "My family moved from Germany in the summer and I haven’t had opportunities to meet others. I don't know people here," he explained with a smile. He popped the trunk of his car and threw his gym bag in there. His car was a mess but the trunk was probably in the worst condition, in comparison to the rest of the car. There was a box of tools and first aid stuff towards the back of the trunk. There were at least two big black garbage bags full of clothing that he had yet to sell or donate. There was also a couple pair of cleats. He always kept spares in his car in case somebody forgot their own. It was a habit he hadn’t abandoned yet after moving to the States. He tossed the car keys into his opposite hand and slammed the trunk down.

"My name's Benno." He extended a large hand out in her direction for her to shake.

When Benno had enrolled in Claremont, he and his family knew hardly anything about the school. It was the one closest to his house and Benno, being in a post-relocation bout of depression and teen angst, had given little concern as to his education in America. He wasn't sure what the student body was like at Claremont, what they did for fun or the minority groups, he knew none of that. However, he was pretty certain that this girl was not an American. He noticed a difference in her voice from the sound of an American voice. This made his smile even brighter. His confidence sparked up a bit. And if he recalled, he saw dorms somewhere on campus, or at least what he thought were dorms. That would mean that some kids were leaving away from their homes and families.

Hmm…maybe I should have done some research before agreeing to go to this school. I might have unknowingly joined a cult, or something, for all I know, he thought.

"Where are you from? Not California, right?"
